One man dead after truck goes off Florence road

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – One man has died after a single-vehicle accident outside of Florence that occurred Wednesday night.

At about 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, a pickup truck went off the left side of East National Cemetery Road, hit a ditch, and overturned, South Carolina Highway Patrol officials confirmed. The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the truck and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Florence organizations collect donations for tornado victims

FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – The Florence Civic Center
alongside of the American Red Cross, City of Florence, Florence County and
other civic and church organizations throughout the Pee Dee want to give
community members a chance to help the Moore, OK community in the aftermath of
the devastating tornado that ripped through their town.

Florence Co. Pine Needles Rd. in need of maintenance

FLORENCE, SOUTH CAROLINA (WMBF) - Overgrown weeds and grass has led members of a Florence community to call Pine Needles Road a "place of eyesores".

Recently Pine Needles Road underwent major construction. Added lanes and an improved overpass are just a few changes made to the area. People who live around the area said those updates are being overshadowed by the lack of maintenance to the landscape on the roadway.

Florence Civic Center plans disaster relief for OK tornado victims

SMG-managed Florence Civic Center in conjunction with the American Red Cross, City of Florence, Florence County and other civic and church organizations throughout the Pee Dee will be collecting donations, both monetary and necessity items for the victims of the devastating tornados in Oklahoma on May 20th. Man dies in crash on Pamplico Hwy

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - A man has died after being hit by a car in the Florence area.

Major Carlos Raines, spokesman for the Florence City Police Department, says the man that died was walking in the area of Pamplico Highway and East Howe Springs Road around 10 p.m. Tuesday night.

He was wearing dark clothing, so the cars in that area could not easily see him. When the light turned from red to green at that intersection, the three cars that had been waiting began to travel through it.

Fed. budget cuts to Meals on Wheels concerns seniors

FLORENCE, SOUTH CAROLINA (WMBF) - Federal budget cuts are
impacting a program many local seniors depend on. Meals on Wheels will have to
cut around 50 Florence seniors from the program.

Administrators at the Senior Citizens Association in
Florence say their Meals on Wheels program serves more than 300 seniors daily.
Many of those seniors depend on two meals from the agency. Linda Johnson is the
Executive Director of Senior Citizens Association; she said the center has
already begun getting calls from concerned seniors.

GE Healthcare brings more jobs to Florence

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - GE Healthcare is preparing to open a new facility in the Florence area that will bring jobs and resources to the Pee Dee.

The economic development and jobs announcement was made at the Magnetic Resonance (MR) Magnet Production facility on Monday, May 20 under a tent to shield the attendees from rain.

Local plant manager La Trina Folk was joined by elected officials and WMBF News Reporter Ken Baker when they announced a new helium liquefaction facility will be built across from the current GE Healthcare building.
